Camp Aircraft Maintenance Programs

CAMP TAJI, Iraq - As they keep the local population safe from insurgents and criminals, the planes of the 1st Airborne Brigade are well-worn in the process.

To ensure that the aircraft is in good condition to continue its grueling mission, it is important to carry out step-by-step maintenance to ensure that all parts of the aircraft are in working order, which takes a lot of time and hard work.

This mission is important for the Soldiers of the 615th Aviation Support Battalion, 1st ACB, 1st Cavalry Division, Multinational Division, Baghdad, who recently began a 500-hour phase-in maintenance on the AH-64D Apache helicopter. put the plane where it belongs - back in the sky.

Maintenance begins after the aircraft is received from the owner company, which is Co. B is about major components of the plane that require overhaul or replacement, said Sgt. Jonah Kakdak, Merced, Calif., phase group leader, Co. B, 615th ASB, 1st AKB.

"They give us a list of maintenance delays, and then the plane usually arrives the next day," Kakdak said. "The owner should prepare the plane for us, wash it, and inventory his property," he said.

After the plane is accepted, technical inspectors will conduct an inspection to identify other defects not picked up by the owner, Cacdac said.

"My guys (Co. B) will then start tearing down and removing all the panels and major components," Kakdak said. "Then the bird is basically exposed."

All actions taken during maintenance should be accounted for, Cacdac said, with a log documenting them.

"I need to fix the books for our workstations, so we write and report that we've removed the black boxes, turrets, and all display units to the armory," Kakdak added.

Before the plane is ready to move again, it will take two weeks to be stripped, inspected and reworked, Kakdak said.

"When it comes out, we'll fire up the blades and check the engine and tail rotor drills to make sure they're working properly," Kakdak said. "Then we'll stage the blades, check the angle, and go over the plane again. Then our [technical inspectors] will look at it for minor deviations."

Maintenance takes a lot of time, but with two crews working around the clock, the job always gets done, Cacdac said.

Helping finish the job was Spc. Song Le, of Tomball, Texas, an Apache Longbow mechanic with the 615th ASB, 1st ACB, said the job his team does is more demanding than most people realize.

"A lot of people don't realize how stressful it can be sometimes because you're dealing with a lot of moving parts," Le said. "People move up and down the plane at the same time."

"We remove the transmission, replace all the filters and make sure there are no cracks or overheating," Le said.

"There's a lot of showmanship, like parts that are sometimes not easily accessible and things like that," Le said. "The mission we're currently working on is going smoothly and well."

It takes a team effort to complete 500 hours of maintenance, Le said, and it's not just one person who makes the difference.

"We have a lot of people working on it," Le said. "There's always someone there to support you with whatever you need."
