Taurus G3x Reviews - There is an old tradition among gunsmiths of mixing and matching existing components in a product line to create new models. This includes the extension and cut-off sliders for semi-automatic pistols. Longer slides increase barrel length and sight radius, while shorter barrels can make the gun easier to carry. Usually the grip frame will widen or shorten along the sled, but not always.
This year Taurus USA released a "hybrid" 9mm G3 pistol called the G3X. It combines the more compact slide assembly of the subcompact G3c with the increased ammo capacity and grip length of the G3. This review takes a closer look at the first-door version, which has an all-black finish and flat slide, is not optically ready, and has a suggested retail price of $342.98.

The G3X combines the G3c's shorter slide with the G3's compact grip.

Like other models in the G3 series, the G3X is a polymer-framed semi-automatic pistol made in Brazil. The G3 models use a short recoil, bolt action with some features and cosmetics carried over from its predecessor, the G2. However, the G3 includes some significant changes in its design.
The subcompact square slide gives this gun an overall length of 6.30 inches. It is made of carbon steel and treated with a durable Tenifer coating that provides wear and corrosion resistance. The nose is shifted for easier reloading, while the back is brown. The slider plate just below the rear sight is rounded to match the shape of the grip frame. The handles on the slide are cut front and rear. The inner edges of the ejection port are beveled for added reliability.
It is not uncommon for privacy practitioners to choose to purchase factory-fitted fiber optic or night vision kits. To facilitate this modification, the G3X has a front sight port and rear sight compatible with Glock-type aftermarket sight systems. However, the Taurus mounts a steel sight system consisting of a white front sight and an adjustable, serrated, square sight at the rear.
The 3.2-inch stainless steel barrel is machined with a conventional ground rifle and a witness bore that acts as a rifling and a loaded chamber gauge at the top of the chamber. Some budget guns ship with barrels that are a little rough around the edges. , however, Taurus makes sure that the G3 series feed launchers are properly polished. The barrel is supported by a two-piece double spring assembly made of steel components.

The framework is largely derived from the G3. This gives the gun a height of 5.20 inches and a double magazine capacity of 15 rounds. The arm is both longer and larger than the G3c from front to back. Although suitable for smaller hands. , this grip is more likely to fit medium to large hands than the G3c. One of the most notable changes to the bezel is the compact dust cover that fits the G3c-style slider. The shorter ground cover is done in the same way. - Picatinny slot accessory embossing reduced from 2" to 1.25". Otherwise, the characteristics of the frame will remain the same.
The dust cover has the frame's serial number. Between the grip and release lever are the left and right sides of the frame (a.k.a. memory stick) that act as contact points for the trigger finger. The sled runs on four short rails mounted on steel support blocks front and rear, held in place by roller pins. The metal slide catch and manual safety lever are located on the left side of the frame, along with the removable polymer magazine button. The front of the trigger guard is slightly curved to serve as a finger rest.
The top of the handle has thumb rests on either side that make the magazine exit more accessible. The handle features a total of six aggressively woven panels to provide a high degree of purchase. Similar in structure to skateboard tape, these sturdy panels prevent dust from slipping in wet, cold or sweaty conditions. They are also very effective when wearing gloves. The trade-off is that the grips can be uncomfortable with bare hands during extended application at the range. An easy fix for this is to wear shooting gloves for long shooting sessions.
Just like any other non-percussion weapon, it takes a few simple steps to break the pistol to clean it.

A short extension at the base of the rear strap prevents fingers from being pinched when slapping magazines during rapid reloading. The magazine well is deep on both sides so it is easier to remove the main magazine plate if it is pulled out while correcting a magazine defect. This pistol comes with bright yellow polymer tracers and two blue steel magazines with numbered ports on the back to monitor the number of rounds remaining. This model does not have a magazine safety, so the gun can fire when the magazine is removed.
The G3 series was launched with a new trigger system that eliminated the relatively heavy and muscular grip of traditional slide pistols. The trigger face is grooved and flattened with a wide safety lever. This ignition system includes second strike capability; this means that in a tight firing situation the trigger can be pulled more than once. The trigger of the tested pistol showed a light weight of 2 pounds. Take with a steady resistance before cleaning with 5 lbs., 9 oz. pull the trigger. Trigger recovery is short and distinct, helping to quickly follow up on shots when needed.
So far I have had positive range testing experiences with the G3 series pistols, and the G3X has not disappointed. The trigger was better for its price, and the gun's controls worked well. During unofficial or official tests, the pistol did not experience any malfunctions.
A review of the range results indicates that the 3.2-inch barrel produces relatively short subsonic projectile velocities with all the pressure of the standard 9mm Luger used for official testing. US Fiocci payloads can move while Hornady payloads are already subsonic. faster than longer barrels. This speed reduction has its advantages. The gun's recoil is less jarring, and the lower velocity contributes to a lower level of perceived recoil. This combined with the full-size grip made working with the G3X very comfortable. Compared to some compact models, it looked more like shooting the .380 ACP than the 9mm.

But if you want to give the gun more power, look for ammunition specifically tuned for short-range pistols. Due to the popularity of compact and semi-compact pistols, most ammunition manufacturers offer at least a few loads designed for them. In terms of accuracy, this particular gun was perfect for a bullet weight of over 115 grains. Heavier bullets shaved off about an inch or so of group size at 7 yards.
With so many shooting products that fit into the small, medium or large categories, it's good that Taurus is keen to develop a defensive handgun that fits those categories. I tried the G3 and G3c before working with the G3X and found reasons to like both. I'm a little surprised at how much I like the G3x. Its feature set offers a different shooting experience than the models on which it is based. It's the perfect size and uncompromised hand-filled and safe. The compact slide gives the gun a light and fast handling that is well balanced with the shape of the grip. And the 15+1 ammo capacity is definitely a plus. Visit taurususa.com for more information.
